Raven Gill Campsite

Raven Gill Campsite is situated in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and is owned and operated by Cleveland Scout Council and is available to Scouts, Guides and other Youth or Educational Organisations.

It is set amid the rolling heather moorland of the National Park in the quiet village of Commondale.
The site itself is a partially wooded valley with a small stream running through the centre with 10 separate camping areas set either side.

The 10 sites range in size from big enough for a quiet patrol camp to site capable of hosting the largest group summer camp. There are also multiple areas suitable for Hammocking and or Bivouacking.
Or if you’re planning something on a district or County scale the site is available for exclusive hire to host those larger scale events.

Each site is within easy reach of fresh drinking water taps if not directly on the site only a very short walk away. Alter fires are available on certain sites and if a permanent one is not available on a particular site, we have portable ones that can be borrowed from the warden for a small charge.

The site hosts two separate campfire circles with basic seated areas again suitable for any size of event.
There are two brick-built toilet blocks, with showers available one at the north and one at the south end of the site. Both are fully equipped with hot and cold running water and a separate small camper washing up area. Again, with hot water.

Raven Gill Campsite is thirty minutes from Middlesbrough and thirty minutes from Whitby. With just a short 10-minute walk to the Railway Station in Commondale which is on the Esk Valley line so easy convenient access to Whitby or Middlesbrough or attractions such as The North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway (Of Harry Potter Fame) or many other destinations along the way.

The location is also within easy reach of places for sailing, climbing and mountain bike hire. As well as endless possibilities to explore the surrounding countryside with various length of walks for all abilities.
During the school holidays and weekends a volunteer Warden is in residence to look after you during your stay and help in any way they can. A small shop is available when a Warden is on site selling drinks sweets and a small selection of badges and souvenirs.

Freezer facilities are available in the Warden’s quarters for campers.

There are two indoors centres which may be hired.

The Centenary Centre was opened in 2007 and can sleep 42 people in five rooms of six, one of eight and one of four. It has a well-equipped kitchen including Plates, Bowls, Mugs & Cutlery for 42 along with a dining/activities room, a small leader’s room and an inside night toilet. The building has radiator central heating so ideal for those cosy winter weekends, Electric power points are also available.

The main toilet facilities are in an adjacent building and consist of male and female washing facilities, toilets and showers, all with hot/cold running water.

The Jubilee can sleep 32. It has two main dormitories one of which sleeps 10 and one which sleeps 14. There are also two rooms of four. There is a large well fitted kitchen with a dining/activities room. Indoor facilities consist of male and female toilets and a shower room.

Other facilities on site include four Training Cabins which are suitable for use as a kitchen for central cooking, or a small group could use them for a kitchen/diner. They are furnished with a table, benches and a fixed shelf that can be used for cooking stoves. The cabins are not available for sleeping purposes.
